Pre-AP/AP English Summer Assignments Main Page
Edna High School English Department
April 2009

Dear Students,
This letter is intended for those who are considering taking a
Pre-AP or Advanced Placement English class during the 2009 - 2010
school year. These classes are designed to prepare you for
college level work and, possibly, college credit. As an AP or
Pre-AP student, you should expect to do extensive reading during
the school year. The Pre-AP and AP classes will include all of
the requirements for a regular English class as well as pursue a
course of study intended as an introductory college course. The
Pre-AP and AP classes require independent analytical writing,
and students will read mature texts of literary merit. These
courses will also prepare students who elect to take the Advanced
Placement Examination at the end of their Junior and/or Senior
years.
Pre-AP and AP students are expected to work independently and be
committed to the time requirements and the scope of a
college-level course.
This means students should:
expect to have homework over weekends and holidays;
expect to work on more than one project at a time; and
expect to spend at least an hour working at home for every hour of regular class.
If you cannot meet the demands of this course and still satisfy
all of your other obligations (school work, employment, and
extra-curricular activities), then please reexamine the
commitment you made when you signed up for AP or Pre-AP
English. These courses are not meant for everyone.
The individual summer reading assignment for each of the Pre-AP and AP classes will
be available online by following the links at www.ednaisd.org,
or those below for each individual grade.
